Ghana’s education system is like the British education system. It starts from Kindergarten to Primary, and Junior High to Senior High, and to the Tertiary institution which could be University, Polytechnic, Nursing Training College, Teacher Training College, etc.
Ghana is a nice country with very hospitable and friendly people who make visitors always feel at home.
Growing up, a Ghanaian child will start school at the age of four years. The child will then start Kindergarten school to learn the basics. At age Six, he or she will be tested and it he or she passes, then they will be moved to the Primary School to start class one. Every year, if you pass, you will move to a step further until you are twelve years in Junior High School.
At the Junior High School one, you are twelve years and almost a teenager, so you are a little mature here. There are three step or years before one completes the Junior High School in Ghana. Averagely, a Ghanaian child will complete Junior High School at age fifteen.
After completing the Junior High School, you will be placed on one of the Senior High schools that you selected based on your grades. At the Senior High school level, you will complain after three years, and finally move to the tertiary institution which could be the University, Polytechnic, Nursing Training College, Teacher Training College, etc. I went to the University of Cape Coast in the Central Region.
Universities in Ghana, like any other in any country around the world, consists of the Public and Private University.
This article will talk about the top four Public Universities in Ghana. Ghana has some of the best universities on the African continent. The top four Public Universities in Ghana include:
- UNIVERSITY OF GHANA, LEGON
University of Ghana, Legon is Ghana’s premier university. It is the oldest public university in Ghana. It has created about 70% of the educated or elite population in Ghana since it was established. The University of Ghana stands tall among all the other public universities such as Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, University of Education, University of Development Studies, among others.
- UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST
I am an alumni of University of Cape Coast. It is the best public university in my books looking at their superb grading system. Graduates of University of Cape Coast are always preferred compared to those from other public universities like Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Education, University of Development Studies, among others, because of their hard work with their studies in school. A university of Cape Coast student always have to work twice as hard before getting an ‘A’ as compared to students at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and some other universities in Ghana. University of Ghana, Legon, has now adopted the superb grading style of the University of Cape Coast and their students have become more hardworking.
- KWAME NKRUMAH UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology is one of the best public universities in Ghana. It is situated in my city, Kumasi, in the Ashanti region. This university is a specialized university for Science and Technology. However, the university currently run some humanity courses aside the Science and Technology. The grading system of this university is the easiest and most flexible. They are yet to adopt the strong and difficult grading system of the University of Cape Coast.
- UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION
This is a specialized university for those willing to read Education courses on various courses such as Science, Sociology, Geography, Medicine, Catering, Fashion, etc. It is located in the Central Region at Winneba.
