Top Five Means of Domestic Transport in Ghana

Human movement is an essential part of life. Everything we do is by movement either by foot, bus, bicycle, truck, lorry, airplanes etc.

It is hard to do something without making a move of a sort. Transportation is forms a vital part of our lives. The types or means of transportation include by foot, bus, train, bicycle, air and sea. It is either you travel by walking that is by foot, take a bicycle, board a car or train, book a flight or go by the ship.

I live in Ghana, West Africa and the following are the most common and popular means by of transport in Ghana.

By FOOT- thousands of years ago, our fore fathers relied on walking as a means of transportation. It was the most common and popular means of transportation in Ghana during those days, since cars, ships or planes were not invented or in Africa yet. However, things have changed now. Walking is the least common and popular means of transportation in Ghana currently. People only take a walk to destination which is near, like a minute or two. I walk to nearby markets, Lorry stations, houses etc, all the time.

By CAR – traveling to work, school, market, etc with a car is by far the most patronized, common and popular form of transportation in Ghana and other countries around the globe. Taking a car to a destination is very popular in all countries in the world including remote areas found in every country. I take a car everyday to my workplace. I use to take a car everyday to school years ago. Almost every movement one make, is centered around transporting in a car. In Ghana, thousands of new cars are registered every year. Individuals keep buying cars on a monthly or yearly basis. Cars in the form of pick ups, trucks, etc are used to transport goods such as timber, cocoa, onion, plantain, tomatoes, among others, from one place to another. Unlike transportation by foot where it can take almost a days to transport goods from one region to another, a car will take you minutes or hours to transport goods from one place to another.

By AIR – traveling by air is considered as the fastest and safest form of means of transportation worldwide. Air flight is able to let you travel to another country miles away, where you could not have travelled by a car or bus. Without airplanes, no one in Ghana would have been able to visit countries in Europe, America, and Asia. Air transportation makes it possible for Ghanaians to travel to USA, Spain, Italy, Germany, Brazil, United Kingdom, etc.

By SHIP – is another popular means of transportation in Ghana. Traveling by Ship is hardly used by majority of citizens of any country. Ship transportation is mostly known for goods transporting. It ships goods from one city to another, one country to another and one continent to another. Shipping as a means or form of transportation takes longer to reach its destination. Sometimes, it can take months before it arrives in another country or continent. All cars and majority of goods are transported to Ghana by Ships.

I do not own a car at the moment, so I take a lorry bus to work everyday. I mostly travel to a different region with a bus but I sometimes take a plane to another region. All these means or forms of transportation namely foot, bus, train, bicycle, air and sea, are very important. They each serve a purpose in our lives. If you need a car from abroad, you need a ship to transport it. If you want to travel to USA, Spain, Italy, Germany, Brazil, United Kingdom, etc, airplanes are there for you, and most importantly, you need a car daily for your daily activities.
